Choosing the right pair of hairdressing scissors for you.

Hey guys so today is something different. I'm starting to dip into my knowledge of hairdressing since I am a qualified hairdresser I thought it would be extremely helpful for those either interested or starting their course this September in hairdressing.

When I was trying to find the right pair of scissors for my level 3 qualification at college I could not find a post that was detailed enough and told me everything I wanted to know about each type of scissors to make the right choice for me. since there is such a massive selection on brand, blade type , size and all that jazz iv decided to start on size. Now some people say that the finger hole should be touching the bottom of your thumb and the blade should be on the last section of your finger. You can follow this if you want but personally because I have extremely long weird fingers if I followed this method I would need around a 6" scissor but iv found the best size scissor for me Is a 5.25"/5.75" now I know this is basically 6" scissor but the little bit is missing I just find it easier to control. Now how I found this out is by trying other peoples scissors in my hand and just seeing how they feel this is what my tutor at college suggested to do. I found my perfect pair of scissors by trying hers so you never know! it's all trial and error.
Scissor handles. believe it or not their are multiple types of handles I personally prefer offset I just find my hand feels more relaxed because one handle us longer than the other and I think this is where I find it more comfortable because your hand is at more of an open position. Another is the crane handle and I haven't actually used a pair of scissors with this handle so iv done some research and apparently they are "similar to offset but the top handle is straight and it allows the elbow to be at a lower position when cutting The last type that I know about is the even handle. I had a pair of these for my training scissors. you can tell because everything looks straight and even with each other.

What blade is best for you.
BEVELLED EDGE BLADE Now this blade is made from a mixture of metals and are micro serrated on one or both blades. This type of blades is perfect when your in your first year of cutting as it helps to stop the hair sliding down the blade. But they are also really good for cutting hair while it's dry. The down side is they can't be used for slice cutting (sliding down the hair cutting motion) which is what I was told for level 3 you couldn't have these type of scissors.

CONVEX BLADE This blade type is the sharpest blade with a razor like edge. This type of blade will give an extremely smooth cut and are perfect for slicing because of how sharp they are. But If you are only just starting out I wouldn't suggest getting this type as they wont help you cut straight and as stupid as that might sound to some doing a basic one length hair cut when your first starting can actually be frustrating because it never looks perfectly straight. Everyone will go off on different angles it all about finding a position that is comfortable for you. So this type of blade is best suited for hairdressers that possibly have their first cutting qualification. Also because these scissors are made from stainless steel they will be heavier then bevelled edge scissors which can make it difficult to get used to them.

Thinning scissors
Now thinning scissors are an essential for your kit and I have multiple pairs. I'm a person that likes everything to match so I have around 3 pairs of different scissors and the matching thinners. If I'm going to be honest you don't really need to spend a boat load of money on them but just get a decent pair that will last you a while.

Razors
If I'm scared of anything its using a razor! I don't actually have a massive knowledge of these as you only use razors in level 3 and I'm only just about to do my level 3 qualification so if you guys want an update when I know more let me know! I hope this made sense and wasn't too mixed up haha! hopefully I should get a "what's in my hairdressing kit bag" soon thanks for reading Abbie xx
